Lung Surgery
Lung surgery is performed to repair or remove lung tissue. It is done under general anaesthesia,
and the two main approaches are thoracotomy (open chest surgery)
and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), which is minimally invasive.
These surgeries help treat infections, tumors, trauma, and other serious lung conditions.
Common Lung Surgeries
- Biopsy of an unknown growth
- Lobectomy – removal of one or more lobes
- Pneumonectomy – removal of a lung
- Pleurodesis – prevents fluid build-up in the chest
- Decortication – removes infection (empyema) from chest cavity
- Removal of blood after trauma
- Removal of blebs causing lung collapse (pneumothorax)
- Wedge resection – removes part of a lobe
- Lung transplant
Conditions Requiring Lung Surgery
- Bronchiectasis – recurring lung infections leading to scarring and blockages.
- Interstitial Lung Disease – scarring from fibrosis, often requiring transplant.
- Lung Cancer – removal of tumors when not manageable by radiation/chemo alone.
- Lung Nodules – benign growths blocking airways and affecting quality of life.
- Blebs & Bullae – removal to prevent lung collapse (pneumothorax).
- Collapsed Lung (Pneumothorax) – surgical repair for trauma-related lung collapse.
- Emphysema – damaged air sacs (alveoli) affecting oxygen exchange.
- Empyema – infected fluid in the thoracic cavity restricting breathing.
Benefits of Lung Surgery
- Removes infections and tumors
- Improves breathing capacity
- Prevents life-threatening lung collapse
- Helps manage chronic lung diseases
- Restores quality of life
